NANCY: Hi…Danny?

DANNY: Hi, Nancy. Hi. How are you?

NANCY: Fine, thanks. Nice tuxedo.

DANNY: I’m…I’m…I’m going to a wedding.

NANCY: For a minute there, you looked like one of those balloon-delivery guys.

DANNY: The balloons are for the wedding.

NANCY: Oh.

DANNY: The couple is Danish, and the Danes have an old custom. Actually, it’s not that old, but the balloons are part if it.

NANCY: Part of the wedding.

DANNY: Yes.

NANCY: Everybody has something. Americans throw birdseed. The Japanese have rubber cakes. In Liechtenstein, they kidnap the bride from the reception….Or is that the Zimbabweans?

DANNY: You know, Nancy, I was just on my way out.

NANCY: Of course. Don’t let me keep you. You don’t want to be late for a wedding, especially if you’re in the bridal party. Are you the best man?

DANNY: No. Yes. Sort of. Nice talking to you. Bye.

DANNY: Nathan, did you read this story about bungee jumping?

NATHAN: No. I’ve been collating these papers since we go here. But I have done it.

DANNY: Bungee jumping? Are you kidding?

NATHAN: A friend of mine dared me. He said if I actually did it, he’d pay for it.

DANNY: So you’ve thrown yourself off a building with nothing but a big rubber band to hold you above the ground.

NATHAN: Yes, I have. But it was a bridge, not a building.

DANNY: Do you do things like this all the time?

NATHAN: Occasionally.

DANNY: Don’t you think it’s strange?

NATHAN: What?

DANNY: That this is how you relax. People in this article bungee jump, and mountain climb and skydive. What happened to checkers?

NATHAN: Haven’t you ever done something just for the thrill of it?

DANNY: Of course. But if I want to relax, I want it to be calm and peaceful.

NATHAN: Let me ask you a question.

DANNY: Yeah?

NATHAN: Is your work here fast-paced?

DANNY: No.

NATHAN: Would you call your home life a thrill a minute?

DANNY: No.

NATHAN: How’s the social life?

DANNY: You’ve made your point, Nathan.

NATHAN: Maybe you’ve had too much peace and quiet, Danny. Maybe you need to do something a little different.

DANNY: Maybe. Nathan, I got to go. See you later.

NATHAN: Danny. Man, I’ll jump off a bridge, but you’re the brave one.

UNIT 50 Lesson 1 Why not? 为什么不行？

角色 BETH     RICHARD

BETH: But Why not? I’m sixteen.

RICHARD: That’s right. You just turned sixteen. You just got your driver’s licence. And you are certainly not driving cross-country with a couple of friends for a winter vacation, because you don’t have enough experience.

BETH: How will I ever get the experience if you never let me do anything?

RICHARD: I hardly think we are that strict. But, as you say, you never get to do anything you want.

BETH: It’s not fair.

RICHARD: I’m sorry you feel that way.

BETH: Ok, I won’t drive. Just Justine and Sarah will. And they have been driving for months and months. We would be totally careful. There’s nothing to worry about. Why don’t you believe me?

RICHARD: It’s not that I don’t believe you, Beth. But the answer is still no.

BETH: But why?

RICHARD: You may not take this trip because you are all young, relatively inexperienced drivers. Since you’re proposing a winter trip, this is an even more serious consideration. We’d be sick with worry, no matter what you tell us. You’re just too wonderful to have around the house.

BETH: You’re running for your stupid office. You’re doing what you want and we have to accommodate you. But I can’t do what I want.
